On July 31, 1956, a few days before the opening of the first Summer Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, the Luzhniki Central Lenin Stadium, then the largest sports complex in Europe, opened its doors. Twelve Soviet records, one European record, and three world records were set during these Spartakiads. The winners received crystal trophies in the St. George Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace.
